Unclassified Roads in Calderdale

Hollingworth Lane, Walsden valley

The following routes are unclassified roads, although they are only shown as footpaths on the definitive map. The first three now form part of the Pennine Bridleway Mary Towneley Loop and all of them are currently open to walkers, horseriders and mountainbikers.  Calderdale Council has failed to make orders to record the higher rights on the definitive map and – unless the council gets its act together – these will be extinguished in 2026.

The Cliviger Network

The following routes were opened as bridleways in 1992 after the Trust’s former Vice Chairman, the late Mary Towneley,  negotiated dedication agreements with the landowners, whom we should like to thank for their kindness and generosity. Lancashire County Council has agreed to add them to the definitive map as bridleways, but as yet has not done so. Consequently at present they are not shown as bridleways on OS maps, although they should appear on future editions.  All of them are ancient packhorse trails and are open to walkers, horseriders and mountainbikers.
