Shore in Stansfield – No-go bridleways

October 2003

For those horseriders that live in and around Shore in Stansfield, it has become a no-go area over the past year.  Two sets of loose horses have been hassling horseriders, and several people have been attacked and kicked, including small children on ponies.  One rider's leg was broken by kick from a loose horse.

In addition, several bridleways are out of repair; three of them have not been usable for over twenty years.

This is an area with over 60 horses and ponies in the immediate vicinity.  Children now have nowhere to ride other than on the roads.

Because of recent obstructions at Lower Shaw Farm, we are having to apply to have the route from Stiperden to Lower Shaw upgraded to bridleway.  If you have ridden it, please contact Todmorden & Walden Bridleways Association (email twba@rightsofway.org.uk).

Problems

1    Lower Shaw:  Gates obstructed at borough boundary; dangerous horses running loose

2    Lower Shaw:  bridleway out of repair - long-term problem

3    Long Causeway:  Out of repair between Bank Top and borough boundary (temporary closure notice) – long-term problem

4    Bridleway 48:  Out of repair between Stoney Lane and Hartley Royd – long-term problem

5    Stoney Lane: Waterlogged and obstructed with pallets and wire mesh.       Fencing down adjacent to Hudson Moor so loose horses straying on bridleway; crevass opened up across bridleway

6  Bluebell Lane:  Recently concreted – dangerous surface, unsuitable for horses
